Shop Cashes Up For The Last Time

Stalham’s Truly Local “the little shop with big ideals” will be cashing up for the last time in December after nearly nine years’ trading on the High Street.

We’re very proud of what we’ve achieved since we started this Community Interest Company in October 2010, opening the shop in 2011. We’ve been able to support well over 150 growers, producers and crafts people, and kept almost £1,000,000 turning over within a radius of 40 miles…… with a particular highlight being the visit of HRH the Prince of Wales in 2012.

During this time the not-for-profit community enterprise has been able to provide part time employment to a couple of members of staff who’ve done a fantastic job, and been helped by a willing small band of volunteers and a group of directors who have given their time freely, and without whom we couldn’t have got this far. We all agree it seems the right time to call it a day and for us to move on to pastures new.

The last nine years have been a great adventure, and have proved that it is possible to buck the trend of multinational domination given a bit of determination, a good deal of vision and thinking outside of the box.

We would like to thank all our wonderful customers from near and far, who have supported us over these years, and we like to think we’ve given them a taste of all the good things Norfolk has to offer.

The shop aims to close on Sunday 8th December to coincide with the Stalham Yuletide Market and will be open Monday-Saturday, 9am-5pm until then.  The Yuletide Market will run in Stalham High Street from 1-5pm.

In 2016  we were Category Winners in the Norfolk Hero Food & Drink Awards. Thank you to our lovely customers who nominated us, and thank you to the Aylsham Agricultural Show Association for recognising our commitment to the local community and Norfolk produce.

It is testament to our continuing success, that we have been able to enjoy the support of locals and visitors alike and celebrate our SEVENTH birthday in March this year.

When you buy from ‘Truly Local’ we make sure you know exactly where your food comes from because we only source produce from within a 40 mile radius of our shop in Stalham, Norfolk. If it’s grown, made, brewed, baked, caught, reared, preserved, pickled or smoked, we make sure our 100+ local suppliers are carefully chosen for quality, freshness and ethical standards.

Because we operate as a ‘not for profit social enterprise’, all proceeds go back into sustaining the business, and so you can be assured that money spent with us goes directly back into the local community.

‘Truly Local’ stocks the best quality fresh and seasonal produce the locality has to offer, with our most popular including local cheese, milk & butter, honey, fruit, vegetables and salads, traditionally made bread and pies, organic flour, free range hen, duck and goose eggs & poultry, fish & crabs, traditionally reared pork, lamb & beef and game.

In addition we stock a surprisingly large range of local award winning bottled beers, wine, and even Norfolk’s very own English Whisky! To complement our range of fresh produce, which we restock on a daily basis, we have a fine array of preserves and chutneys, sauces, oils, vinegars and ice creams. Currently we are developing our schemes for veg boxes, hampers and welcome packs for holiday cottages, not to mention our barter system for fruit and veg surpluses. Added to this, we stock a unique range of crafts, so if it’s food & drink, cards, drawing charcoal, paintings, bee houses or just a postcard, you have the satisfaction of knowing you are supporting a local supply chain, without the added food miles. Not many other small businesses can boast they have put back almost £800,000 back into the local community, which is exactly what we have done over the past 7 years………………..pretty amazing.

To add to our early success, during our first six months of trading we were winners of two impressive accolades. The first wasWinner in the East of England – Action for Market Towns Award, and the second was the John Sweeney Environment Award from North Norfolk District Council, both of which recognise our achievements in promoting local produce and enhancing the environment.

Perhaps the icing on the cake in February 2012 was a visit from HRH The Prince of Wales, who so enjoyed his visit that he has since bought more from the shop.

As if that wasn’t enough recognition to be going on with, we were  thrilled to be Winner in the Norfolk Food & Drink Awards 2012 for ‘Best Independent Food & Drink Retailer’ and runners up for the same award in 2013. The awards keep on coming……….watch this space. What a brilliant first 7 years!

It’s thanks to all our lovely customers and brilliant suppliers who continue to make this small business a resounding success.
